Maniacs
MANIACS Program: Your Pathway to Competitive Taekwondo
The MANIACS program offers a structured pathway from club-level competition through to state, national, and international Taekwondo events. This program not only provides an opportunity to compete but also focuses on developing essential skills such as teamwork, discipline, and training under controlled, high-pressure conditions tailored to support young athletes.
The program is designed for students starting at the blue belt level (with some exceptions), typically around 8 years of age. Competitions at this level are mostly club-based and conducted within a strict and well-regulated environment. Participation requires the purchase of appropriate protective equipment, which is available for purchase through our centre.
New MANIACS students are offered a free term, with the following minimum protective gear required:
Plastic Arm Guards ($55) — cotton guards may be used temporarily if available
Plastic Shin Guards ($55) — cotton guards may be used temporarily if available
Groin Guard ($35) — compulsory for boys
White or Clear Mouth Guard — compulsory (not sold by us)
All equipment, except mouth guards, can be ordered through our centre. Because classes include controlled contact, wearing protective gear is mandatory. Contact is limited to protected areas of the body; there is no head contact or head kicks allowed at this stage. Instruction focuses on developing foundational skills to score points effectively and defend against body attacks.
With over 30 years of experience running the MANIACS program, we have maintained a strong safety record. While this is a contact sport and some risk is inherent, injuries are minimised through careful supervision, a sufficient number of coaches, experienced instructors, clear guidelines, and the option for students to opt out of any activity if they wish.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What if I don’t enjoy the program?
Taekwondo isn’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. If you decide it’s not right for you, just let us know. You’re always welcome to return and join again later if you change your mind.
Will I need to purchase additional equipment after my free term?
Yes. After your free term, you will need to obtain a body protector ($70), head guard ($70), hand gloves ($55), and foot gloves ($55).
Can I borrow equipment during my free term?
You may borrow body protectors during your free term. However, for health and hygiene reasons, groin guards ($35), hand gloves, and foot gloves cannot be borrowed. These items should be purchased if you continue into the next term.
What about competitions?
We hold competitions periodically. Participation is decided by the MANIACS coaches based on readiness and safety. If coaches advise that you are not ready for a particular event, please trust their judgement—it is always with your safety as the top priority.
Do I have to attend all MANIACS classes?
Attendance is encouraged weekly to keep up with new skills and progress in the program.
What if I miss a class?
While regular attendance is important, we understand that sometimes you may miss a class. Please notify us by email so we know you haven’t withdrawn from the program.
Are makeup classes available?
Yes. If you miss a class, please contact our office. You may attend a makeup class either on Wednesday or Saturday.
